Marcella, White, not sure of her ethnic origins, could be Portuguese or Spanish, most likely a little Scandinavian, she is a fairly attractive 40 something, slender woman, had hopes of being a civil rights attorney, but after failing the bar exam four times, she gave up and settled into management at the U.S. postal plant. She had been tremendously successful and upwardly mobile. She started as a lead machine operator 20 years ago, was promoted to supervisor then night manager and now she was the plant manager. Contrary to popular belief, she did not sleep her way to the top. She knew how to work the professional demeanor and discretion and it was recognized and rewarded. While Marcella had a heart for fairness and treated everyone with dignity and respect, but because her corporate position required her to adhere to standard operating procedure which rendered unpopular business decisions she was considered racist by the Black employees and just bitch by everybody else. Marcella achieved her success by being keen in her discernment of character and integrity. Marcella is single and has never been married. Some even have surmised that she is a lesbian, but she certainly is not. She has entertained long distance enjoyable relationships with other professional postal managers, but their job commitments never seem to allow for the gelling of a serious relationship.
Marcella has a brother who is married to a Black woman from Cuba. They have two young children in their marriage of 10 years. Marcella is a doting aunt. Because of the polarized racial climate at her job, Marcella has never disclosed her personal life to any of her co-workers or employees. She is intensely aware that being related to other races does not ingratiate one to the other races, so she unlike other White people she knows, does not play the “related to Black people card” in an effort to absolve her from unpopular business decisions.
