ECLIPSE OF THE TRUTH
By Linda Olden-Smith
Another Black man is shot. This time by a White ex-marine. Without due process, the media proclaims guilt. A Black Republican detective pursuing the truth is reconnected with a Black Democrat woman from his past. Alone together, they must overcome personal, social and political obstacles to stop vigilante justice.
A Black police detective dedicated to a thorough investigation, risks his career to continue his pursuit of truth when his investigation exposes evidence outside of the media narrative. A deceitful media narrative that asserts that a White ex-marine with PTSD, Johnathan Trimble suspected of being a White supremacist, is guilty of shooting an unarmed Black college student in cold blood, leaving the young man in a coma with his life weighing in the balance throughout the story.
Detective Kenneth Madison, is the high strung, politically charged, experienced St. Louis police detective, initially assigned to investigate this crime.
Square, nerdy Jabari Burton becomes confused about his Christianity and his masculinity when he is humiliated by his demonic cult leaning gangbanger cousin Ray-Ray and his crew. At this visit to his cousin to borrow money, the cousin persuades Jabari to hide a gun he used in a tragic drive by shooting that paralyzed a five-year-old girl. Conflicted, returning home, alone in his room, Jabari practices assuming a gangbanger persona to prove his masculinity, if only to himself. After believing he has successfully achieved this manly gangland identity, he goes out with the gun as a prop, to tryout his jacking skills, in the park that night. There he encounters Johnathan Trimble on his 5 K jog. Unbeknownst to Jabari, Trimble is an ex-marine with trained hand to hand combat and proficient weapons skills. In the skirmish, Trimble gets hold of the gun, Jabari is shot, and Trimble is accused of initiating the attack. Trimble argues self-defense claiming there was a witness who fled the scene in a Black Ford Focus.
Brenda Freeman, a religious Christian, Purple Heart widow and mom owns a Black Ford Focus. Brenda does not want to come forward. For one, she has been wrongly accused of stealing two hundred thousand dollars from her post office job. Secondly, she does not want to be tagged as an Uncle Tom for coming forward to help the White man amidst the racial uprisings over the incident, as this she believes, at this time, could negatively impact everyone close to her.
When the famous Reverend Hezekiah Boone, a self-imposed Black leader and political agitator, comes to town, worried about possible riots, the investigation is abruptly shut down. Due to his revile of what he believes are Boone’s evil, self-aggrandizing motives, Madison goes against his “toe the bureaucratic line” Lieutenant’s orders. The Lieutenant has been imported to from New York to clean up racism in the department. Madison’s lone investigation begins with the search of the alleged Black Ford Focus. After investigating other cars, he finds himself at Brenda’s door. Coincidentally, the two knew each other in high school and reconnect. Though politically different, they bond on the common ground of their Christian convictions. Madison has a powerful impact on Brenda’s conscience which inspires her to come forward.
When Madison brings her in to give her statement, things go terribly wrong. Hezekiah Boone working in the background, has learned about Madison being on the case and has him followed revealing Brenda as the witness. Boone learns of the accusations against Brenda. Using his media connection, the, sexy, materialistic, opportunistic, news anchor, Yvette Swanson, Boone works behind the scenes and appears to circumvent Madison and Brenda by publicly assassinating their characters with Yvette’s help.
This media masterplan misfires when Swanson’s conscience is dramatically transformed by heartbreaking and traumatic experiences with Madison and Boone. This frees Brenda from the theft charges, Trimble from the intentional shooting accusations, saving Madison’s job and exposing Boone for the charlatan he is. Finally, Jabari awakens. The Truth shines, all is well.
